Hellingly Village

Hellingly Village is a small beautiful East Sussex village just north of Hailsham and off the A267.  Hellingly village is based very much around the local church and consists of only a small number of homes.

The local church was built back in 1190 and is believed to be built above a historic burial ground.  This burial ground is called a Ciric and was constructed as a mound above ground in order to keep those buried above the water level.  It is believed that the reason the mounds were constructed dates back to a Celtic belief in immortality. 

Dating back to 1541 it has been documented that Lord Thomas Fiennes of Herstmonceux was the first noble to be hung for the death of a commoner.  He was not alone but was hung with three other men.  It is believed that he was killed for the murder of a commoner after a fight broke out during the hunt close to Hellingly village. It is also believed that Lord Thomas Fiennes of Herstmonceux was hung out of greed for his land and title.

Hellingly village is now considered a peaceful and beautiful collection of Sussex cottages.
