The history surrounding Herstmonceux.
Herstmonceux
Herstmonceux gets its name from an Anglo-Saxon word called
hyrst. This Anglo-Saxon word means a wooded hill. The other part of
the name Herstmonceux comes from the Monceux family. The Monceux family
were the major landowners in that area during the 12th century.
Herstmonceux used to be called Gardners Street. Herstmonceux is
situated east of Hailsham and West of Battle. The Herstmonceux parish
includes several villages including Cow Beach, Stunts Green and part of
Windmill hill. It also includes Herstmonceux Castle.
The castle in Herstmonceux, which is some 2 miles east of the
village, was formally an observatory. Herstmonceux Castle is now an
international study centre for a university in Canada. It therefore
often caters for Canadian students and also holds an annual Medieval
Herstmonceux Festival.
The local church is a Church of England church called All
Saints. The church that dates backs to the 20 century, with the oldest
tower over looking Herstmonceux Castle. The Herstmonceux church is
located on the road between the village and road leading to the Castle
and was erected in 1811 and is now a listed building.
The area around Herstmonceux is known for making baskets derived
from willow boards are set in either a chestnut and sometimes ash
frame. We are fortunate that some local skilled people have kept the
tradition alive and within the area of Herstmonceux still make Trugs.
